Mark Phillips

Facilitator

Who am I?

I joined PPWD back in 2022 as a facilitator having worked with Paul Davison before within his RAF Cadet Sqn. and knowing him and his wife Jenny via a shared love of horses.  My background is MoD I guess you would say, having spent 23 years in the army starting out as a tank driver and via several permanent training roles ending my time as a commander of 3 tanks. My career after the Army didn’t move far joining the MoD Police, this isn’t the military police, in camo wearing a red beret, you might be thinking of but a force similar to your local police force in looks and powers.  There I went from an armed security role to being responsible for some 4500 police officers operating in hazardous environments.  I left in 2016 to become a civvy (civilian).  Since then, I have been delivering training/facilitating/compliance managing in many H&S type roles.  I find my time at PPWD takes this career path to a high level.  Jacqui and I are married and are still the best of friends as we have been since 1979 when we first met.

Why do I do what I do, what’s my purpose?

Sheep Dog, the American military use this phase to describe someone who protects the heard, they often use it for snipers who provide over watch to protect soldiers on the ground.  I have felt this way about myself for as long as I can remember, I want, no, need to protect my people.  My people has been expanding for as long as I can remember.  Today my people expands well beyond people I have physically met. Even what constitutes protecting my people looks like develops constantly.

At PPWD I’m surrounded by people like me, the whole organisation is full of people who really care about people, be that 1 meaningful conversation at a time or helping change laws to protect everyone, our mission gets me out of bed in the morning.

How do I do it?

PPWD isn’t a job, it’s a vocation in my view.  Self-development is in its DNA, better self-awareness enables us to be better versions of ourselves every day, so we can help others (my people) to do the same, this is how we grow safety capacity and well beings.
